Global IT Provider, Techbuyer Named ‘Circular Economy Business of the Year’ at the IEMA Awards

Techbuyer, a sustainable IT solutions supplier with sites in Europe, the US and Asia Pacific, has won ‘Circular Economy Business of the Year’ at the IEMA Sustainability Impact Awards. The awards recognise businesses paving the way for a sustainable future in innovative ways.

Techbuyer buys, refurbishes and sells server, storage and networking equipment, PCs, workstations and laptops in order to extend product life and help to maximise IT budgets. The company provides new and quality refurbished IT solutions, as well as repairs, flexible IT contracts and a free Configure-to-Order service for their clients across the world.

With over 99% of incoming products refurbished and the remainder ethically recycled, Techbuyer’s business model is entirely circular.

The awards, sponsored by VolkerWessels UK and RRC International, were held virtually on 18th September. Sarah Mukherjee, CEO of IEMA, stated: “Techbuyer and all the winners can be proud of their achievements – action to tackle the climate and environmental crises that we face requires businesses, industries, civil society and our politicians to step up and lead the transformation and change needed’.

“IEMA’s Sustainability Impact Awards 2020 provide a showcase for some of the best leadership and innovation from our members and the wider sustainability community. The winning entries highlight the vital role business and industry can and must play in transforming our world into a sustainable and green future – the leadership and inspiration provided by sustainability and environmental professionals is fundamental to that success”.

With an average of 20% turnover increase year on year, Techbuyer has proved that investing in the circular economy makes both environmental and business sense. The team also won a Queen’s Award for International Trade earlier this year in recognition of their expansion into Asia Pacific.

Techbuyer is an associate partner of the Circular Economy in the Data Centre Industry (CEDaCI) project by London South Bank University, where the team provides insight into the material makeup of data centre equipment. The project aims to aid product life extension and reduce the environmental impact of the IT industry.

They also lead a Knowledge Transfer Project (KTP) with the University of East London, which is developing an energy optimisation tool to further improve the sustainability of data centres.

Overseas, Techbuyer USA is an active member of the Remanufacturing Industries Council (RIC) and helps to further the remanufacturing industry by supporting codes and standardisations.

Rich Kenny, Group IT Director at Techbuyer states: “We’re delighted with this award win. Far from being the success of one department, every single person in the business has contributed to this result. From repairing used IT equipment, to helping customers reuse their IT devices wherever possible, to contributing to ground-breaking industry research… There's a wonderful commitment to making lives better for people in our communities, region and even further afield.”

2020 has been a busy year for Techbuyer. From free IT rentals for the NHS at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, to a new Laptop Refresh Service which maximises performance without the need for buying new devices, Techbuyer’s circular approach keeps customers coming back time and time again. With a three year warranty for every IT device and component, secure data erasure and performance as good as new, Techbuyer’s IT solutions ensure excellent quality.
