The London Internet Exchange (LINX) is a not for profit, member owned organisation of networks that interconnect at key locations in order to exchange internet traffic. This process is called ‘peering’ and the benefits include increased control and security over data transfer and also lower latency, so reduced buffering or lag.
Last month, LINX officially welcomed new partner TeleData to the LINX Manchester network, making them the 4th PoP (point of presence) in the city.
Damien Ransome, Operations Director for Layershift Limited said; “Peering at LINX Manchester has improved the quality of our network connectivity almost overnight. As well as the general benefits afforded by establishing direct NOC to NOC communications with neighbouring networks, we've been able to demonstrably reduce occurrences of tromboning traffic down to London and back.
“It's great to be part of a growing IXP right on our doorstep, and we look forward to LINX Manchester continuing to strengthen and decentralise the connectivity between more UK ISPs and content networks to ensure the overall resilience of the UK's network infrastructure.”
Matt Edgely, Commercial Director for TeleData added; “Layershift is one of our longest standing customers and it’s fantastic that they have become the first to further enhance the quality of their connectivity as a result of the LINX Manchester and TeleData partnership. The very purpose of our data centre is to provide the tools to enable and optimise the delivery of our customers’ business critical technology - this is further testament to our ability to do this in partnership with key enablers such as LINX”.
TeleData UK provides colocation, cloud hosting, workplace recovery and data centre services. The firm’s solutions are designed to enable organisations to protect their applications, data and online presence from the damaging effects of downtime, and to make the most effective and efficient use of technology with secure and scalable hosting platforms tailored to business critical needs.
Jennifer Holmes, LINX CCO said; “This is a perfect example of the benefits of peering on a regional level. We are so pleased to welcome Layershift to the LINX Manchester community and look forward to assisting them in their peering needs going forward.
“Launched in 2012, LINX Manchester has gone from strength to strength attracting a productive mix of content and access networks on a local, national and international scale, who value the approach of ‘keeping traffic local’”
The exchange boasts over 140 connected member ports and counting, peak traffic of over 100Gbps and greater than the coveted 99.999 % for reliability.
